President Joko Widodo confirmed that the status of the ship lost near Bali was changed to "sunk" or drowned, and expressed deep regret at the tragedy.

Indonesian National Armed Forces commander Hadi Tjahjanto confirmed on Sunday that 53 people aboard the Indonesian submarine KRI Nanggala-402 had died.

The German-built submarine went missing during military exercises in the Bali Sea on Wednesday.

It was discovered at a depth of 850 meters (about 2,800 feet), according to the Navy. The oxygen supply on KRI Nanggala-402 was believed to have run out Saturday morning.
