British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Monday that he will do everything in his power to ensure that the proposed breakaway Super League of the twelve largest European football clubs does not go as planned.
"We are going to look at everything that we can do with the football authorities to make sure that this doesn't go ahead in the way that it's currently being proposed," Johnson said in a pooled interview.
“I don’t think that it’s good news for fans, I don’t think it’s good news for football in this country.” England's soccer team's Manchester United and Italy's Juventus shares surged on Monday after they and 10 other top European clubs announced the creation of a breakaway Super League that could significantly boost revenue for their wealthy owners.
The news was condemned by football authorities, fan groups, and political leaders who claimed that the move was driven solely by money and a selfish desire undermining the integrity of the sport by creating a closed shop for elite clubs.
